You have to ensure that the Mac has enough space to store the files you want to restore from the dead laptop.
Instead, you can simply connect another external hard drive up to the working Mac and transfer data from the old hard drive to the new one using the Mac.
After that, you should connect the dead Mac to the running Mac using the firewire cable you bought earlier. You have to ensure that the working Mac is turned off during this process.
The next step is to boot up the running Mac in Target Disk mode following these steps:-
